The Third City Between Baltimore and D.C. Comes to Life

Downtown Columbia is becoming the Garden City that Jim Rouse envisioned, adding “urban-style density without losing it’s suburban soul.”

The prominent feature on Bloomberg.com discusses the influence of James Rouse, who began buying up 14,000-acres of Howard County farmland in the 1960s to create Columbia, Maryland. Channeling his vision, Howard Hughes works to build out various areas in and around Town Center, among them the Lakefront and Merriweather District. This community is designed to serve as a downtown for residents of the more park-like residential villages scattered around it. Greg Fitchitt of Howard Hughes, calls the project a “model for the reinvention of suburbia.”
