#1 Best City in Maryland to Find a Job

Columbia, Maryland, home to Merriweather District, has been named the best city in the state—and the third-best in the nation—to find a job. The city was also named #1 in the U.S. in 2022, and #2 in the U.S. in 2021.

This data comes according to WalletHub’s 2025 rankings, an annual study that references factors related to job market strength, including employment growth, job openings, and starting salaries. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball called the ranking an affirmation of Columbia’s commitment to job seekers and employers.

Job security is another advantage highlighted by the study. WalletHub found that Columbia has the ninth-lowest share of jobs at risk of automation. As AI and technology change the workforce, Columbia’s job market appears more stable than many others.

The city also ranks fourth in net employment outlook, meaning more local employers expect to hire than downsize. As of November 2024, Howard County’s unemployment rate was just 2.6%, well below the national average. With its high wages, job stability, and strong local economy, it’s no surprise that Columbia continues to be one of the top places in the country to build a career.

And, it is also no surprise that Merriweather District’s fully amenitized office space, all in a walkable and vibrant community, is the ideal location for leading businesses.
