Baltimore Region receives Federal Tech Hub Designation

The Biden administration and the U.S. Department of Commerce designated the greater Baltimore region one of 31 tech hub designations in the United States, locking in the region as a preferred location for future federal investment to build the technology ecosystems at the intersection of artificial intelligence and health care. Organized by the Greater Baltimore Committee, the designation includes Howard County Economic Development and Downtown Columbia.

“This designation affirms our region’s commitment to innovation and will help further propel the immense growth that is transforming the greater Baltimore area into a thriving business and tech hub,” said Kristi Smith, President of the Maryland region for Howard Hughes. “We are looking forward to more opportunities to accelerate tech growth in Downtown Columbia and the Baltimore region in the years to come, and we congratulate the Committee and all the partners who have worked to make this initiative possible.”

The region will compete for a share of a $10 billion investment to create physical infrastructure supporting the growth of artificial intelligence and biotechnology innovation ecosystems, incubators and lab space, invest in AI-based therapeutic ventures, and prepare the region’s workforce for these jobs of the future.

“The support that this investment will bring to the greater Baltimore region — now nationally recognized as an area of high potential – will help grow a more equitable economy that will expand opportunity, lead to better outcomes for our residents and make us an internationally leading innovation hub,” shared Maryland Governor Wes Moore.

The ongoing efforts are expected to bring more than 50,000 new jobs to the State of Maryland by the year 2030.

Downtown Columbia has already been established as a place for medical and healthcare companies to grow their businesses.
