Howard Hughes Communities 2022 Report
Howard Hughes’ 2022 Communities Report outlines its decades-long commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and transparency.
The annual report reviews initiatives and performance in 2022 that reinforce its thoughtful, innovative approach to development. With eight communities developed across six states including Merriweather District in Downtown Columbia, it demonstrates that Howard Hughes continues to promote a legacy of responsible stewardship. This stewardship is an essential component of ensuring the long-term, sustainable growth of all of its communities, including the area we call home in Downtown Columbia, Maryland.
As shared by Kristi Smith, President, Maryland Region, “In 2016, we made a commitment to meet a 30% diverse contracting goal for publicly funded infrastructure projects as part of the Downtown Columbia Plan. We have exceeded that goal on all our infrastructure projects, but we didn’t stop there. We have increased diverse contractor participation to over 30% on recent privately funded developments as well. We constantly strive to be better and to do better—to go beyond what is required of us as builders, employers, and stewards of the land we develop—because it is the right thing to do.”
Downtown Columbia’s development continues to honor James Rouse’s respect for nature and embrace inclusivity in its approach to building design, construction, and operations. Its newest office building works to create health and vitality from the inside out. Events in 2022 include UNBOUND, Books in Bloom, and the Good Kid-izen Series.
