Columbia Wins Awards for Lifestyle in 2023

Once again, Merriweather District is proud to call Columbia, Maryland home. Already ranked #7 as one of the happiest places to live in America, Columbia, Maryland is also now ranked #13 in Wallethub’s “Best Places to Raise a Family” and Livability’s “Best Places to Live in the U.S..”

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball proudly made this announcement, acknowledging that Columbia was the sole Maryland city to achieve such recognition. He attributes these distinctions to the ongoing investments made in supporting families, enhancing the community, and improving the overall quality of life. Having personally raised his family in Columbia, Ball has long been aware of the city’s special appeal to its residents and visitors alike. Within the past year, Columbia has earned various prestigious titles, including one of the Best U.S. Cities for Jobs, Safest Cities in America, Happiest Cities in America, and Best Cities for People Living with Disabilities.

The county’s historic $2.16 billion 2024 budget reflects its commitment to education, with a record $1.1 billion allocated to the Howard County Public School System. In pursuit of healthier and safer communities, the county is taking significant steps, such as establishing the Youth Engagement Leadership Workgroup. This group’s primary role is to devise innovative ideas and strategies to address issues affecting young people in Howard County and advise the county on how to engage and support its younger constituents.

Furthermore, the county has teamed up with the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland and HCPSS to provide free RTA bus access to students.

Earlier in 2023, Niche.com also gave Columbia, Maryland an A+ on its report card, honoring it as the #5 Best City to Live in America.
